Two INCAR Researchers were selected to integrate the Scientific and Technical Aquaculture Committee (CCTA)

Two Principal Investigators from the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research were selected to be members of the Scientific Technical Committee for Aquaculture (CCTA). They are Dr. Ruben Avendaño-Herrera and Dr. Doris Soto Benavides, who were selected as advisers for the Health and Territorial Planning CCTA, respectively.
“My collaboration in this committee is to make myself available to the tasks that Subpesca and its authorities require, especially considering that aquaculture is a priority area for the economic and social development of the country, which must continue to grow but with environmental responsibility. ”Said Dr. Avendaño-Herrera, Principal Investigator of the line“ Animal health in freshwater life stages of salmonids ”of INCAR and Academic of the Andrés Bello University, upon learning of his incorporation to the committee.
Meanwhile, the Principal Investigator of the Integrative Program of the INCAR Center and expert in ecology, Dr. Doris Soto, intends to contribute with a more integrative approach to aquaculture by facilitating an ecosystem approach.
In the opinion of Dr. Soto, some priority areas to develop sustainable aquaculture are to integrate existing scientific information to establish criteria, indicators and standards that guide spatial planning of the sector, particularly considering possibilities for diversification and integrated multitrophic aquaculture, among others.
“We may also have to look at the spatial and temporal development of coastal and marine aquaculture with greater flexibility to respond to forces such as climate change and other threats,” concludes the expert from the Incar Center.
Both researchers will fulfill the task of being advisory and / or consulting bodies of Subpesca in scientific matters relevant to the administration of aquaculture activity in Chile.
