A new policy brief has been presented by a group of researchers from the “Socioeconomic Sustainability” line. This brief titled “Opportunities and challenges for small-scale aquaculture: Reflections from actors” focuses on the challenges and opportunities that Small Scale Aquaculture (SSA) faces in Chile. The team behind this research includes Dr. Marjorie Baquedano, INCAR Associate Researcher, Dr. Carlos Chávez, Associate Researcher, and Dr. Jorge Dresdner, Principal Investigator at INCAR. The authors focused on whether local communities in the coastal communities from the Lake District are willing or prepared to adopt Small-Scale Aquaculture (SSA) as an additional income generating activity. To gather insights, the researchers consulted artisanal fishermen, union leaders, and government representatives at both the local and national levels. The policy brief thoroughly examines the factors that either promote or hinder the development of SSA in Chile. The authors emphasize that there are certain factors that contribute to the growth of SSA among current and potential producers. One significant factor is that SSA is perceived as a supplementary work activity that can be carried out alongside other tasks throughout the year.
