Proposal to regulate the maximum production of salmonids in Chilean marine ecosystems, according to their carrying capacity

INCAR launches its Policy Brief No 11 “Proposal to regulate the maximum production of salmonids in Chilean marine ecosystems, according to their carrying capacity”, leaded by Dr Doris Soto.
In the short term, the PB recommends a traffic light system based on eutrophication risks (as an initial approach), for all relevant marine water bodies where salmon farming takes place in the Chilean Patagonia fjords systems. In the long term, it is recommended to implement a secondary environmental quality standard (NSCA) in all the water bodies affected by various human activities including urban development, sewage inputs, fisheries, marine transport, tourism, land use changes, mariculture etc. The document also underscores the need to preserve and care for marine protected areas and avoid salmon farming or any activity which may threaten their objects of conservation.
