Next Friday, January 22, at 11:00 am, the conference “The Ocean challenge and the keystone actor idea” will be held, by the Scientific and Academic Director of the Stockholm Resilience Center, Stockholm University , Sweden, Dr. Henrik \u00d6sterblom.
\nThe activity organized by the line “Socioeconomic Sustainability” of the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research, INCAR, will have the participation of the Main Investigator of the line, Dr. Jorge Dresdner, as Moderator, and with the Associate Researcher of the center, Dra. Jeanne Simon, as a panelist.
\nThe initiative arose from the contact that members of our line have with researchers from other countries, in this case with the Stockholm Institute of Resilience. Initially it would be an internal activity for the members of the line, but with the passage of time it was decided to open the seminar to other audiences.
\n\u201cIt is a topic of great interest to INCAR, and it is very relevant to understand how sustainable aquaculture can be advanced in the world, and especially in Chile. The interaction between the different actors that participate in the sector is key to moving towards a governance model that is consistent with economic, social and environmental balances \u201d, stressed the Principal Investigator of the INCAR Center, Dr. Jorge Dresdner.
\nSeaBOS
\nDr. \u00d6sterblom, leads the Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship (SeaBOS) project, an initiative that, for the first time, connects the global seafood business with science, connecting areas such as fisheries with aquaculture and connecting European and North American companies with Asian companies.
\nIts objective is to lead a global transformation towards the sustainable production of seafood and a healthy ocean. The initiative actively contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and, in particular, Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.
\nThe talk is based on a scientific article published in 2015 by \u00d6sterblom, Jouffray, Folke et al. which illustrates that the largest companies in a given industry may operate similarly to keystone species in ecological communities, meaning that they may have a disproportionate effect on the structure and function of the system in which they operate. The key players in the world’s seafood products control 19-40% of some of the largest and most valuable stocks and 11-16% of the world’s marine catch.
\nStakeholders represented at SeaBOS produced a joint statement in November 2016 that expresses their commitment to stewardship of the oceans. The statement outlines their concern for the current and future state of the ocean and identifies a number of areas that they will address together to actively contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
\nSeaBOS is currently made up of 10 of the world’s leading seafood companies: Maruha Nichiro Corporation, Nippon Suisan Kaisha, (Nissui), Thai Union Group PCL, MOWI, Dongwon Industries, Skretting, Cargill Aqua Nutrition, Cermaq, Kyokuyo and CPF .
\nThe presentation will address the importance of the link between science and industry, and the role that scientists can play in facilitating change by connecting knowledge with action among global players, while recognizing the risks associated with such engagement.
\n\u201cOur mission, in addition to generating knowledge and science of high relevance and relevance for the sustainable development of national aquaculture and promoting the ecosystem approach to aquaculture; It is also to summon all the actors of the community linked to the sector to reflect and dialogue with a scientific basis.
