The FAO report, known as SOFIA (State of the World Fisheries and Aquaculture), has been recently released. This report gathers information on production, value, and other relevant aspects of global fisheries and aquaculture using statistics reported by countries for the year 2022.
SOFIA’s 2022 report revealed that global fishery and aquaculture production had reached 223.2 million tons, with 185.4 million tons derived from aquatic animals and 37.8 million tons from algae. It is significant to note that, by 2022, the farming of fish and invertebrates (mollusks, crustaceans, and others) for human consumption had exceeded 51% of the total production, indicating the rapid growth of aquaculture.
SOFIA emphasizes that a key objective for the global aquaculture industry is to expand and intensify sustainable aquaculture practices to meet the worldwide demand for aquatic food, while also ensuring the fair distribution of benefits. This objective aligns with various SDGs, striving for environmental and social equilibrium within the sector, including nutritional aspects. In Chile, it is crucial to continuously tackle the challenges related to spatial integration of the aquaculture sector with other users of marine and coastal ecosystems, all while upholding and safeguarding biodiversity.
