Instituto Océanos (Ocean Institute): the new institute from Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) to enhance its leadership in marine sciences.

On Wednesday, December 4th, a ceremony led by Dr. Carlos Saavedra Rubilar, the Rector of the University of Concepción (UdeC), marked the inauguration of the Ïnstituto Océanos (Ocean Institute). The primary objective of this institute is to integrate the diverse research lines related to marine studies at the University of Concepción, aspiring to become a prominent reference both nationally and internationally, promoting interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary cooperation in exploring the dynamics and sustainability of oceans, thereby enhancing the welfare of the country and the planet.

The institute seeks to play a crucial role internationally, particularly in relation to the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ, Biodiversity beyond National Jurisdiction), while also addressing the ocean’s role in the challenging economic conditions faced by the Biobío region. The institute will collaborate with several established research centers, including INCAR, and will be initially directed by Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa Quijada, who is also the Director of IMO-Chile.
