Researchers from the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) and the Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) discuss the challenges in oceanic research while emphasizing local strengths

On Friday, March 21st, a group of academics and directors from research centers at the University of Concepción met with Captain Carlos Zúñiga Araya, Director of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) and President of the National Oceanographic Committee (CONA).

The purpose of the gathering was to dive into the details surrounding the formation of the Ocean Institute, which unites the University of Concepción’s research expertise groups in ocean-related studies. Additionally, the meeting aimed to outline collaborative efforts in data management and technological development while reviewing the university’s progress in this field.

Attendees included prominent researchers including Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa Quijada, Director of the Institute of Oceans and the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO); Dr. Renato Quiñones Bergeret, faculty member in the Department of Oceanography and Director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR); Dr. Fabián Tapia Jorquera, faculty member in the Department of Oceanography and Deputy Director of the COPAS Coastal Oceanographic Studies Center; Dr. Marcus Sobarzo Bustamante, Director of the Department of Oceanography and Associate Researcher at INCAR; Dr. Óscar Pizarro Arriagada, faculty member in the Department of Geophysics and Scientific Director of the Oceanographic Instrumentation Center; Dr. Martín Jacques Coper, Director of the Department of Geophysics; Nadin Ramírez Riveros, Executive Director of the Oceanographic Instrumentation Center; Dr. María Lorena González Hurtado, Executive Assistant of the Institute of Oceans and Postdoctoral Researcher at INCAR; and Juan Fierro Contreras, Executive Secretary of the National Oceanographic Committee.
