Contributions to the New Chilean Aquaculture Legislation

During the second semester of 2024, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) of Chile, began a participatory process to collect input regarding the elaboration of a new aquaculture law.

INCAR, as an Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research, undertook an internal discussion and analysis led by the researchers of the Center’s Integrative Program, Dr. Jessica Fuentes and Dr. Doris Soto. This effort was designed to contribute to the process through scientific and knowledge-based insights, leveraging the center’s work in developing recommendations for public policies informed by our research (“Policy Briefs”). Additionally, an ongoing analysis was conducted to evaluate the current aquaculture regulations using the FAO’s ALART tool and the FAO questionnaire regarding compliance with the Code of Responsible Conduct for Fisheries, specifically Article 9 concerning aquaculture. Recent FAO guidelines for sustainable aquaculture (GSA) and other significant articles in scientific literature have also been reviewed.
The contribution of INCAR to the discussion of the new Aquaculture Law, which was uploaded to the participatory platform created by Subpesca at the end of October 2024, can be read and downloaded here (in spanish).
