With the objective of understanding the efforts made by Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) egarding oceanic matters and to to seek support for Chile’s proposal to become the host for the General Secretariat of the BBNJ treaty (Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction), Senator Ricardo Lagos Weber held discussions with Rector Carlos Saavedra and notable marine science researchers, including Dr. Renato Quiñones, who is the Director of the INCAR Center.
The discussion underscored the important contributions of UdeC and its research center Instituto Océanos, led by Dr. Osvaldo Ulloa, in the creation of knowledge pertaining to marine ecosystems.
The BBNJ Agreement, the third treaty arising from the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, aims to conserve and sustainably utilize marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdictions. It addresses four key areas: environmental impact assessments, marine protected areas in the high seas, management of marine genetic resources (and benefit-sharing), and technology transfer and capacity building.
