Dr. Doris Soto participated in event organized by the Norwegian Embassy and Subpesca to discuss the future of the global aquaculture industry

On July 10th Dr. Doris Soto Benavides, the Principal Investigator of the Integrative Program at the Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR), participated as a guest panelist in an event co-hosted by the Norwegian Embassy and the Undersecretary of Fisheries, titled: “Chile and Norway Towards a Global Aquaculture Industry of the Future.” The event was held at the residence of the Norwegian Ambassador, Per Anders Nilsen, and featured the participation of the Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), Julio Salas, the Head of the Aquaculture Division of Subpesca, Constanza Silva, and the Deputy Director of Aquaculture at the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), Mónica Rojas, among others. The event aimed to gather representatives from institutions, academia, and businesses to discuss the shared challenges of aquaculture in both nations and to encourage dialogue prior to the AQUANOR meeting, which will take place in Norway in August of this year.

Dr. Soto addressed several gaps in innovation for sustainability in the global aquaculture sector and in Chile, emphasizing the need to extend innovation beyond the cultivation center itself. The INCAR researcher highlighted the urgency of considering nutrient emissions, antimicrobials, pesticides, and their impact on ecosystems, as well as the need for public-private collaboration and cooperation among aquaculture countries in innovation, to assess the fate of nutrients left by aquaculture in ecosystems.
