New course for graduate students: “Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Productive Densities in Salmon and Mollusk Farming”

The Interdisciplinary Center for Aquaculture Research (INCAR) welcomes participants to the postgraduate course entitled “Productive Densities of Salmon and Mollusk Cultivation from an Interdisciplinary Perspective.” This 40-hour course is free of charge and will start in the first week of September online, with accreditation provided by Andrés Bello University.

Densities in aquaculture (salmon, other fish, shrimp, mollusks)

• Welfare of animals: growth, survival rates, and stress levels
• A comparative analysis of density regulations among major salmon producers (Chile, Norway, and Canada)
• Management of density and the Percentage Reduction of Seeding (PRS)
• Environmental and production consequences of cultivation densities and the spatial distribution of salmonid production: implications for a potential traffic light system to regulate maximum production per water body
• Potential socio-economic effects of a traffic light system that regulates densities and maximum production limits
• Climate change impact on densities (Risk assessment maps)
• The occurrence of outbreaks of various recurring pathogens (Caligus, bacteria, viruses)
• Environmental impacts of antibiotic usage
• Non-pharmacological alternatives to antibiotics and antiparasitics: their effects on the health and production of cultured fish
• The significance of density management for sustainable and resilient mussel farming: intensity of collection in seed production and productive carrying capacity during fattening.
